Coffee Delivering COP26 Promises

PHIL HEALY

COP26 which refers to the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference which is this year is the 26th summit. Kaphi Kapa's co-founder Phil Healy in this article shares his views on the progress and how we intend on support this cause through our coffee!

It’s been pleasing to see tackling deforestation as a strong commitment at the COP 26 climate conference in Glasgow, with promises of hard funding to support this goal.

KAPHI KAPA'S CONTRIBUTION

I’m pleased that our own efforts in Nepal establishing organic, socially responsible coffee farming with our Kaphi Kapa brand are already bearing fruit, with several hundred coffee trees planted this year and thousands of further saplings now being prepared in association with a Coffee Research facility for the next several years’ expansion. We’re also co-cropping with pepper and I intend that my pet favourite Jatropha beans can feature in future for production of bio-Diesel oil.

In Nepal, this niche crop produces remarkably good coffee from high-altitude north facing slopes, enables previously under-utilised farmland to help globally with CO2 fixing, provides extra security against soil erosion or landslides on precarious hillsides. It delivers a high value crop, allowing equitable rewards for rural farming economies.

Let's hope COP 26 now delivers, by truly supporting similar initiatives globally, incentivising the retention and expansion of trees as a live, sustainable economic community resource and not regarded as get-rich-quick timber, or a nuisance to be cleared!
